A man has been jailed following the death of a man in Burton in 2019.
Davyd Florian Lincan, 23, of Chartist Road, Birmingham, was sentenced to three years and nine months imprisonment for the manslaughter of Stan Bacioiu today (Friday 30 July) at Stafford Crown Court. He pleaded guilty last month.
Stan Bacioiu, 44, originally from Romania, died at Nottingham Queen’s Hospital on 1 December 2019, following an assault on Uxbridge Street on Friday 22 November.
Police were called to reports of men fighting outside an address at around 9.30pm.
A fight involving around 14 people started inside, before spilling out onto the street, where Mr Bacioiu was injured.
Crews from West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene and Mr Bacioiu was taken to Nottingham Queen's Hospital in a critical condition.
The senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Zoe Kelsall, of the Major Investigations Department, said: “This was a tragic case. Stan was a completely innocent bystander and not involved in the fight.
“Lincan fled the country after the incident and it took some time to locate and extradite him.
“On behalf of the police and the CPS, I’d like to thank Madalina and her friends for their support during this investigation. His widow remains in the country alone. Stan was her only family in the UK. Her life has been changed forever.”
In a family statement, Madalina Bacioiu said: “It is very difficult for me to speak about the man I have loved so much and who was an extraordinary husband in the past tense. Even though we have only been together for almost five years, it hurts just as much as if we had been together for 50 years. He was a warm, loving, calm person, who was kind and helping everyone; he was friendly and giving - in short, a very special man.
“On that fateful day of Friday 22nd November 2019, around 22:00hrs, the peace ended for our family, making space for pain, despair, disappointment and last, but not least, hatred against the person who, in a matter of minutes, destroyed my life.
“Every night I prayed to God that there would be justice for my husband and that the person who did this would be punished.
“When my family liaison officer told me that the perpetrator was caught, I felt great joy, as well as relief and closure.
“I wish to say a big thank you to the police in this country for everything they have done for me, for all their work and effort and for their interest in us as foreign citizens.
“I would like to also thank my friends, my colleagues, my employers and all the people who have helped me directly or indirectly throughout this painful episode of my life.”
