A driver who tested positive for cocaine has been jailed after he collided with a pedestrian in Stoke-on-Trent.

29 year old Arsalan Ahmed from Shelton was driving an Audi A3 along City Road, Fenton, in May when he collided with a pedestrian.

The force of the collision sent the pedestrian, a man in his 30s, into the path of a moving van.

Ahmed continued to drive away and later abandoned his car on Manor Street. The driver of the van stayed at the scene and helped emergency services deal with the incident.

A short time later, Ahmed returned to the area and handed himself in to officers. He tested positive for cocaine.

Forensic experts reviewed the collision and found that Ahmed was travelling at speeds up to 51 miles per hour before the crash, despite the speed limit of 30 mph.

The victim was treated for serious injuries in hospital and is still receiving treatment after being discharged. He has been unable to return to work following the injuries he suffered in the collision.

Ahmed pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was sentenced to three years behind bars at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Wednesday (27 September). He was also banned from driving for three years and six months and ordered to take an extended re-test.

PC James Addison, from the serious collision investigation unit (SCIU), said: “I hope this serves as an example to anyone who gets behind the wheel whilst unfit to drive that your actions can have catastrophic consequences.

“The victim in this case will unfortunately live with these consequences for the rest of his life. I’d like to offer my condolences to him as he continues to come to terms with what happened.

“I’d also like to reiterate that those who drive dangerously and put other people at risk through their own actions will be targeted and put before the courts.”
