A lorry driver who crashed into a car, narrowly missed several other vehicles, and later assaulted a police officer has been jailed for 18 months.
Jurijs Pirogovs, 52, from Wolverhampton, appeared at Stafford Crown Court on Thursday, 31 July, where he pleaded guilty to a string of serious offences, including dangerous driving, assaulting an emergency worker, driving without a valid licence, failing to stop after a collision, and operating a vehicle without insurance.
The incident unfolded on the evening of Monday, 22 July 2024, when officers were called to Lammascote Road in Stafford just after 6:30pm following reports that an articulated lorry had collided with a car.
Police quickly located the lorry and trailer on Foregate Street and followed it onto Lichfield Road, where they were able to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. Upon exiting the cab, Pirogovs kicked a police officer.
Footage recovered from the lorry’s own dashcam showed a catalogue of reckless behaviour, including running a red light, straddling lanes, mounting a kerb, and forcing other drivers to brake or swerve to avoid a collision.
In addition to his prison sentence, Pirogovs was disqualified from driving for 21 months.
No serious injuries were reported.
