One person seriously injured after M6 lorry crash in Cheshire

One person has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after a lorry crashed into a bridge on the M6 in Cheshire.

The collision happened on the northbound carriageway near to Sandbach this morning.

The motorway was shut between junction 17 for Sandbach and 18 for Middlewich. Cheshire Police said the road would be closed for 'several hours'.

A number of diversions have been put in place whilst emergency services deal with the incident. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 8am on Tuesday 7 September police were called to reports of a collision on the M6.

"The incident on the northbound carriageway near to Sandbach involves a HGV which has collided with a bridge. One person is believed to have sustained serious injuries.

"As a result of the incident the carriageway is currently closed northbound between junctions 17 (Sandbach) and 18 (Middlewich).

"The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.

"Local diversion are place but there are long delays and members of the public are advised to avoid the area if possible.

"Updates will be provided when available."
