Jacob Cuthbert, 23, was jailed for eight years
A man who chased after a man and his two young children with a machete in Kidsgrove has been jailed.
Jacob Cuthbert, 23, of Grasmere Terrace, Tunstall, was sentenced after the incident which took place in August 2021.
Cuthbert was sentenced for a number of offences including affray, robbery and possession of a bladed article in a public place.
During a hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, the court heard how the defendant chased after a man and his children after threatening a group of men outside a corner shop on Heathcoate and King Street in Kidsgrove.
After calling the police to report the man, Cuthbert turned on the man and his children and took out a nine-inch machete and ran after them.
Cuthbert then used the machete to injure the man, who needed a partial amputation of his arm after trying to flee.
In addition to injuring the victim, Cuthbert slashed several tyres along the way, smashed a mobile phone and stole a ÂŁ2,500 silver Tag Heuer watch.
At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Cuthbert was handed an eight year sentence, with two years and two months on extended licence, meaning he will not be released from prison until 2030.
Speaking about the ruling, Detective Christopher Wright from Staffordshire Police welcomed the ruling.
"I would like to thank the brave victims and witnesses in this case who came forward," he said.
“Cuthbert is a very dangerous individual who imposed a serious threat to the community through his violent criminal actions and this is reflected in the sentence.
“We hope this serves as a reminder that the force will take all of necessary steps to protect the safety of our communities and apprehend those intent on causing fear and violence.”
