An investigation has begun after reports of people throwing rocks from a footbridge over the A54 in Cheshire.

At around 8.50pm on Thursday 16 May, officers were driving a marked police vehicle along the A54 Oakmere Road in Winsford, near to the overhead footbridge.

Unknown offenders threw rocks from the footbridge, which made impact with the police vehicle and smashed the windscreen, obscuring the driver’s view. No one was hurt.

At 4.45pm on Monday 20 May, police received a further report of three youths throwing stones and rocks from the footbridge.

Inspector David Levins said: “This behaviour is incredibly dangerous and puts road users at serious risk.

“Not only can it cause damage to vehicles, but could potentially injure drivers and passengers, as well as cause a road traffic accident on an incredibly busy section of road.

“These incidents are currently isolated, however we are urging parents and carers to talk to their children about the dangers of this kind of behaviour and the serious consequences which could come from it.

“If anyone witnesses this type of behaviour, or has any information regarding the two previous incidents, please contact us on 101, or through cheshire.police.uk/tell-us, quoting IML-1825212."
