Tributes have been pouring in for our friend and colleague, George Andrews, who's died after a short illness.

He passed away in hospital this morning (Friday).

Often known as Georgie Boy he was a well-known voice to many in Staffordshire having commentated on football matches through the 80s and 90s and was still working for Signal 1 and Greatest Hits Radio attending games and press conferences.

George joined Signal 1 when it launched back in 1983, and also working with other local radio stations, including BBC Radio Stoke during his career, which lasted over 40 years, and saw him cover over 5000 games.

Tributes from football clubs and listeners

Stoke City are amongst those posting a tribute online - calling George a local media stalwart, and saying he'll be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

Port Vale described him as a legend:

Crewe Alexandra described him as a 'passionate advocate of all local sport'.

Fellow broadcasters also paid tribute:

George was someone who we worked with for a long time here at Greatest Hits Radio and we will miss him.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family.
