Fan dies after walking home from Stoke City cup tie
Supporters rushed to help but he later passed while in hospital
A fan has died after becoming unwell on the way home from Stoke City's cup tie against Brentford last night.
Paramedics and Stoke City Football Club praised supporters who rushed to help the man and provide CPR after he began having a cardiac arrest.
The incident occurred on the footpath leading to the A50 bridge and Highfield Drive.
Despite the efforts of both bystanders and emergency services, he died after being taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Stoke City also expressed their sympathy for the family of the supporter:
"The thoughts of all at SCFC are with the family and friends of the supporter who was taken ill as they made their way home from last night’s game.
"Despite the best efforts of fellow fans and medical professionals, the Club is sad to learn that the supporter passed away."
The news comes after a Newcastle United fan was recently discharged from hospital after collapsing during a Premier League game vs Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.
80-year-old Alan Smith spent eight nights in hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest when in the stands at the game.
Supporters similarly provided CPR, but a nearby doctor in the crowd was also able to give professional attention before he was rushed to hospital.
