Process started to close Grade II listed church in Newcastle
Church leaders say attendance has been very low for a long time
The future of a prominent church in Newcastle-under-Lyme hangs in the balance as those responsible for it have confirmed an intention to close it.
The impressive St Paul’s Church on Victoria Road is a Grade II listed building which was built around 1905.
A visible sign is cable tied to the front gates which advertises a public meeting on 6th August 2024 to discuss the future of the church.
A spokesperson from The Church of England Diocese of Lichfield told us: "The worshipping congregation at St Paul’s Church has been very small for some years.
"The Parochial Church Council have passed a resolution to start the process for closure. The public meeting is the next stage in that process.
"The process for closure follows the requirements of the Mission and Pastoral Measure 2011 (Amended 2018). A key component of this process is consideration of the future use of the building."
The Church of England Diocese of Lichfield spokesperson added: "It is important to note that there are currently 3 Anglican churches with substantial buildings within ½ a mile of each other in the centre of Newcastle (St Giles, St George’s and St Paul’s), and several others within 1 miles, so if the building is to close for public worship plenty of opportunities for worship will remain."
