Bus gate to come into force
Motorists will be barred from driving past Stoke-on-Trent’s main railway station from Monday. A bus gate has been installed in Winton Square, Stoke as part of a major revamp of the Station Road area, funded through a £29 million grant from the Transforming Cities Fund.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council says the bus gate will come into force from Monday, meaning only buses, taxis, cyclists and emergency vehicles will be drive through Winton Square. Anyone who breaks the rules will receive a £70 fine. Motorists will still be able to access the station car parks on either side of the bus gate, as well as the North Stafford Hotel.
The bus gate in College Road came into effect in 2023 as part of the wider Transforming Cities programme. Council leaders say the changes will make bus services to and from the station more reliable, as well as create a more welcoming environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
A council spokesperson said: “The bus gates on College Road and Station Road will come into force from Monday 25 August. The gates give priority to buses and ensure services are reliable and on time.
“Restrictions are clearly signposted, and any motorist who breaks the rules will face a penalty notice.”
