A man and a woman have been arrested after their XL Bully reportedly bit a newborn baby in South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire Police says its just the latest serious incident in the area involving a dog and a child, leading to fresh calls for parents to take precautions.

Inspector Steve Usher from the force's Dog Legislation Team said: “No matter the breed, size or temperament of your dog, it can bite, attack and cause serious injury, or even death.

“While all dogs have the ability, we know that those of a certain breed and size can cause greater harm due to their capability.

"This is not about breed, this is not about us having an ‘anti-breed’ agenda; we don’t care what breed your dog is, we care about the people in our communities and those who cannot protect themselves.

“We are urging dog owners and parents to act. Stop thinking it won’t happen to you because it can.”

Authorities are stressing the importance of not leaving children unattended with dogs, regardless of the breed.
