'We want answers' say family of Sheffield man who died in crash
Sean Salvin's parents think he crashed into a tree in Sheffield and died after skidding on flood water.
The family of a South Yorkshire man who died after crashing into a tree just before New Year's Day say they need answers.
20 year old Sean Salvin's parents believe he was driving along Ecclesfield road in Sheffield when he aquaplaned because the road had flooded during heavy rain.
They've told us they want to know why the road wasn't shut despite other drivers telling them they called police about how unsafe it was before Sean crashed.
They've described Woolly Wood Bottom as "a bad patch of road" and have raised concerns about drains being blocked and poor street lighting.
An inquest into Sean's death has been adjourned until April.
His family say that's too long for them to wait to find out more about how and why he died.
To help them cope with their grief they've started campaigning to make the road safer by starting a petition to get the speed limit lowered and to improve lighting and drainage there.
His dad Craig said:
"We're trying to cope best we can which we're finding really hard. We want a lot of answers which we still don't have.
"I don't want people to go through what me and my wife have gone through; losing our son because of poor street lights, bad drainage, basically a bad patch of road.
"We think the speed limit on there is too fast. It goes from a 30 to a 60 to a 40."
We've asked both South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council for a response to the points raised by Sean's family.
Roads Policing Inspector Craig Clifton said:
“The loss of a young life is always a tragedy, however at this time of year it can be felt even more so and our thoughts are with Mr Salvin’s family.
“We have provided support and assistance to the family following the incident and we will continue to do so in any way we can to help them through this incredibly difficult time.
“Mr Salvin was travelling in his car on Wednesday, 30 December along Ecclesfield Road, in the area known as Wooley Wood Bottom, when he was involved in a collision at 10.30pm.
“There were no other vehicles involved in the collision however Mr Salvin sadly died as a result of the injuries he sustained.
“Two calls had been received through the 101 number shortly after 10pm the same night, advising of excessive water on a section of Ecclesfield Road.
“Following procedure, the information was immediately passed through to the Local Authority’s Emergency Team to determine whether action needed to be taken on the highway.
“An investigation into the collision is ongoing and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
“Anyone with information should call 101 quoting incident number 1092 of 30 December 2015.”
A spokesman for Sheffield City Council said:
“Our thoughts are with Mr Salvin’s family at this very sad time. It would be inappropriate to comment further on the cause of this tragic collision prior to an inquest taking place, and while the police investigation is underway.”
Sean's family are holding a fundraiser later this month to raise money for a headstone for Sean's grave.
