Merseyside Police have arrested two people following a incident that resulted in a man being shot in the leg in Wallasey.

Officers were first alerted to an ongoing incident taking place on Lucerne Road just before 11:20p.m. on Saturday (June 29th).

When responders arrived at the scene, they found a 33-year-old man from Sheffield who had been shot in the leg on nearby Wheatland Lane.

An investigation was launched immediately, as the victim was taken to hospital for his injuries.

Following and initial examination, medical professionals have said that the man's injuries are not life-threatening.

Speaking on the case, Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton from Merseyside Police said that the force's enquiries were in the early stages, but the force was looking into the events that led up to the incident.

"We believe that two men from the Sheffield area had met with a group of three or four men in Lucerne Road and shortly after meeting a firearm was discharged which resulted in a 33-year-old man from Sheffield being shot," he said.

"It is understood that the victim made his way on to Wheatland Lane. Two people in car, who were driving along the road, saw the victim in the road and stopped to assist and call the emergency services."

He also said that about ten minutes after first being alerted to the incident, a stolen Nissan Navara was found burnt out close to Poulton Victoria Football Club on Clayton Road, less than one mile from where the incident took place.

He urged anyone with information to get in touch as soon as possible as it may help the police in their investigations, with a particular focus on anyone who may have seen or heard anything at the time of the discharge.

“At this stage of our inquiries the motive for the attack and the identity of the victim is unknown," he added.

"Merseyside Police will not tolerate the use of firearms on our streets and we are relentless in our "pursuit of those involved in gun crime on our streets to ensure they can be brought to justice.”

Anyone who may have any information can get in touch with the force by calling 101 and quoting incident reference number 1088 from June 29th.
