Police name victim of fatal M62 collision as appeal launched
Leslie Lewis was killed in the incident near the Scammonden Bridge
Police in West Yorkshire have named the person who died in a fatal collision on M62 near the Scammonden Bridge.
The force has also continued to appeal for information as officers try to piece together how the victim died following the collision last Saturday (March 23rd).
West Yorkshire Police's Major Collision and Enquiry team confirmed that the victim was 78-year-old Leslie Lewis, who had been living in the Doncaster area.
Mr Lewis was confirmed to have suffered injuries from the collision between junctions 22 and 23 on the M62 and eventually died due to the injuries he received.
The incident took place at 2:06 a.m. when Mr Lewis' Vauxhall Corsa had collided with another vehicle whilst he had been travelling in the wrong direction.
Officers working on the case have been working out Mr Lewis' journey along the motorway, discovering that he had driven his car from Doncaster to Hull on Friday evening (March 22nd).
Following this, he began to travel from Hull to Manchester, before returning to West Yorkshire along the M62, stopping at Hartshead Moor service station.
However, as Mr Lewis exited the services, he took the wrong exit and proceeded to drive westbound on the eastbound side of the road.
The driver of the other car involved in the collision, who has been described as a male, currently remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Police are continuing their appeal for information regarding the incident and are urging anyone who may have seen anything relevant to get in touch as soon as possible.
Sergeant Steve Suggitt from the Major Collision and Enquiry team at West Yorkshire Police said: "A great deal of work remains ongoing to investigate the circumstances of this collision which tragically resulted in Leslie’s death and in another driver receiving serious injuries.
"I am seeking assistance from any member of the public who may know Leslie and had contact with him on Friday 22nd March, whether in person or by telephone, as it is important we build up a full picture of the circumstances of the incident. "
