South Yorkshire Police officer appears in court accused of blackmail
The charges related to the alleged wrongful handling of an investigation
A South Yorkshire Police officer has appeared in court accused of blackmail.
28 year old Marie Thompson, who worked as a PC in Doncaster, is also accused of perverting the course of justice after an internal investigation.
She was suspended from duties following her arrest in October 2023, with the charges relating to the alleged mishandling of an investigation.
She appeared before Leeds Magistrates' Court yesterday and has been bailed ahead of a hearing at Leeds Crown Court on August 26.
Detective Superintendent James Axe, head of Professional Standards at South Yorkshire Police, said:
"We continue to be firmly committed to openness and transparency in relation to our professional standards, even when we have been investigating such serious reports against serving police officers."
"Members of our communities here in South Yorkshire rightly expect and deserve only the very highest standards from our workforce and we work hard to root out anybody who fails to meet these standards.
“Any officer found to be guilty of criminal offences or misconduct will be dealt with appropriately."
