Sheffield Wednesday's ongoing wage crisis appears to be showing no sign of letting up.

Yesterday, the Owls failed to pay their staff on time for the second straight month - with fears now that some players could walk out.

Dr Dan Plumley is an expert in sports finance at Sheffield Hallam Uni - he says it's far from ideal this close to the new season:

"Normally what would happen in the worst-case scenario is administration first; and that will principally happen probably in this case by HMRC calling that in if the tax bill remains unpaid.

"So, that's an option which could end up materialising, but it's not a pleasant scenario as that carries an automatic 12-point deduction on the pitch.

"In terms of Sheffield Wednesday ceasing to exist - I just don't see things getting to that point.

"The players now have to tell the club formally that they want to terminate that contract, and then the club have got 15 days to buy them back into their contract.

"So, we know some of those players have not been paid - more than likely for two straight months - but the players have to activate that clause in their contracts for the 15-day period to begin.

"Sheffield Wednesday needs a lot of work behind the scenes; infrastructure and playing wise as well.

"So, it's not just a purchase price - it's everything else you've got to put forward too.

"We're out on valuations between what the Chairman's looking for and perhaps what the market value is.

"With every passing day in this situation, the value of the club is decreasing ultimately."

First team players at Hillsborough can now hand in their notice - & unless they're paid - they'll be able to leave later this month.
