A Sheffield Wednesday fan - has ‘apologised unreservedly’ for sharing an offensive post on social media - after the death of an away fan at Hillsborough Stadium last year.

Richard Crisp - of Lennox Road in Sheffield - has today been sentenced to a 12-month community order at Sheffield Magistrates Court - having previously pleaded guilty to the charge of ‘Malicious Communication’ from September of 2024.

This all happened after the death of West Brom fan Mark Townsend - who passed away following a medical incident at Hillsborough during the Owls’ Championship fixture against the Baggies last September.

Earlier, the court’s heard how Richard Crisp posted the ‘offensive’ remarks online after the game which referenced the Hillsborough disaster - having drunk a lot of alcohol due to the stress he was under in his personal life.

The judge sentenced him to a year long community order - with court fees worth £199 that he’ll have to pay back within 28 days.

The 55-year-old’s legal representative read a statement out on his behalf, saying he ‘apologises unreservedly to all the people he affected & for the upset & anger he caused’.
