Ahead of Bonfire Night-people across South Yorkshire are being reminded to 'be conscious' of how Ukrainian refugees in the UK may feel when they hear fireworks.

It's as some argue the sound of explosions could trigger a sense of anxiety amongst those who've fled warzones this year.

Paul Iwanyckyj is the Chairman of the Doncaster branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain:

"I think it's important we're all sensitive. Hosts in particular need to be sensitive with this.

"Guests should be briefed as to what's going on, as people from Ukraine probably won't understand why there's more fireworks going off at this time of year.

"These modern fireworks are almost like missiles, so it'd be easy to get stressed if you didn't know what was going off or be shocked at the scale of it.

"Hosts should have the conversation early with any Ukrainian refugees they're putting up, as it's all happening now isn't it really.

"We've had three nights of loud fireworks in Doncaster already, so it must be quite confusing for some who aren't aware of the culture around it.

"Bonfire night feels a bit like a three-week festival these days.

"When we've had relatives arrive over this period since the war in Ukraine started, we had a cousin arrive with two young children.

"The children were very nervous when they arrived at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, just with the planes going overhead, because their association with anything flying overhead has been very negative."

Mr. Iwanyckyj also says the communication online from the city's council has been helpful in getting the message of reassurance out there:

"I take my hats off to Doncaster Council.

"They've been very supportive from the start, and they've been very proactive.

"A lot of the time, they've considered some of these things even before we've mentioned them; that's often been the pattern as well.

"All the right messaging has gone out on social media and that sort of thing."
