Bonfire night is one of the busiest every year for fire and rescue services across the country. Hallam FM spoke to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue about why it's so dangerous and what can we do to make it a little safer.

Station Manager Spencer Rowland explained that many of the fires that the service attends are easily preventable. They have issued three top tips for everyone to stay safe this evening:

'1. Attend organised displays – they’re much safer than holding your own 2. Only buy fireworks from reputable retailers and never from people on the street* *3. Light bonfires well away from sheds, fences, bushes and trees'

Station Manager Spencer Rowland also explained that fireworks are the biggest danger at this time of year, with many under 18's managing to get hold of them, and putting themselves and others in danger.

'People playing with fire works. Setting them off in places they should do. Setting them off firing them at cars and buses etc. It may seem like good fun but obviously it’s not its very dangerous, they are an explosive at the end of the day.'

'Another big danger we have is bonfires. People having bonfires of their own, having them too close to the house, the shed, bushes etc.'

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are urging parents to warn their children about the dangers surrounding fireworks, and how to use them safely this year.
