"It's soul destroying" - South Yorkshire people excluded from support call for change in Budget

It's thought 3 million across the UK have missed out on government schemes

The Chancellor's being urged to give a lifeline to South Yorkshire people and businesses who've had no financial support to get them through Covid.

It's thought three million people across the UK haven't qualified for government schemes despite taking a hit in earnings during the pandemic.

Two MPs from South Yorkshire are among those who've signed an open letter to the Chancellor urging him to change that in the Budget tomorrow.

Anita's business in Rotherham has been hit hard by the pandemic - but because it has no premises, it's not qualified for any financial help.

She says it's been really hard:

"I just feel ignored and irrelevant. Having my hands tied behind my back plus somebody making decisions that excluded the business is quite insulting and quite soul-destroying

"We've waited a year. We just want to see some fairness in this system."

Chancellor Rishi Sunak will lay out his spending plans in the Budget tomorrow and it's thought he'll extend schemes like furlough, to help businesses get through to the end of restrictions.

But Anita says he must think of those who haven't yet qualified for any help too:

"The businesses that have survived have done an incredible job to do so under the circumstances but going forward some support and some acknowledgement that we've been left behind to give our businesses a boost and some security to carry on would be untold.

"It's made it incredibly tough knowing that I had to support all the different aspects of my business and the personal knock-on effects of the pandemic without any additional support, specifically while all the time sending money to the Treasury and paying my dues for the money that was coming in.

"These people are the same that would be helping the economy to bounce back. They're expected to carry the burden of repaying the debt but are not getting the support they need, or have needed, throughout this pandemic."

Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis and Rotherham Central MP have both signed the letter from the Excluded UK group to Rishi Sunak.

We've asked the Treasury for a response.
