People in communities across the UK are being empowered to save lives in their local area, to help tackle the number of people dying from cardiac arrests.

The lifesaving equivalent of neighbourhood watch -GoodSAM - will offer free CPR training and defibrillation awareness to more people living in towns, cities, and rural areas.

They’ll be alerted via the Ambulance Service to local emergencies through their phone, attending cardiac arrests quickly and before the emergency services arrive.

Janice Wilkinson from Barnsley saved her dad's life when he had a heart attack by carrying out CPR for 20 minutes whilst waiting for an ambulance to arrive:

"It happened when I was visiting my dad at his bungalow.

"All I was interested in was getting my father to recover. I'd do it for anybody in that situation.

"If I hadn't been there, I think my dad would've died from that heart attack.

"At the time, I wasn't shaking or anything. It was just after when the ambulance crews got there that all the shock hit me.

"If somebody collapsed in front of me right now, I'd always have a good go at saving their life through CPR - so it's worth having those skills."
