South Yorkshire couple remind other parents to 'never be too cautious' when it comes to sepsis

It's after Emma Chadburn & Ryan Goodjohn's 18-month-old son Ezra passed away from the condition back in 2019

Parents across South Yorkshire are being encouraged to try and 'spot the signs' of sepsis in young children.

Sheffield couple Emma Chadburn & Ryan Goodjohn lost their 18-month-old son Ezra to the illness almost 3 years ago-just after Christmas in 2019.

Sepsis is when the body has an extreme reaction to an infection.

Emma - who lives in Stannington with Ryan and their two other children - has been telling us what symptoms to look out for:

"It's about going with your gut, but also just not being afraid to just get them checked.

"If they've got a temperature, not having wet nappies, not interested in eating or drinking or if they're lethargic.

"It can also be a really low temperature as well; things like extremely cold hands and feet or mottling of the skin.

"Don't be scared to ask if it's sepsis."

Ezra's dad Ryan says every second is crucial when a young person has sepsis:

"It could be like 12am at night when someone starts to feel really ill, and the temptation could be to wait until the morning, but time is of the essence when someone has sepsis.

"You could potentially lose your life if you don't get treatment straight away.

"The scariest part is when the young person affected can't talk to you.

"They can't tell you what's wrong, so it's vital to act as early as possible if you think it could be sepsis."

Emma & Ryan have raised around £13,000 for sepsis charities so far since Ezra's death.
