People across South Yorkshire urged to 'take extra care' whilst celebrating bonfire night
We've been speaking to the region's fire and rescue service about the potential hazards which people should try and avoid
People across South Yorkshire are being reminded not to act 'recklessly' this evening, as the region prepares to celebrate bonfire night.
The annual tradition typically involves a lot of sparklers, fireworks, and bonfires, but often results in more accidents and a hectic evening for the emergency services.
Steve Jones from the region's fire and rescue service has this advice when it comes to lighting bonfires:
"A lot of people think that it's a good idea to get it going with petrol or an accelerant.
"If this is left for any amount of time then the bonfire can literally explode and cause quite horrific life changing injuries.
"Things like hair are very flammable, which can be affected straight away once a match is lit.
"Items like clothing can also easily catch fire."
Mr. Jones, who's a Station Manager at South Yorkshire's fire and rescue service, also wants people to try and watch any fireworks displays indoors if possible:
"The safest place to be is inside your house behind a glass window, especially if you have small children.
"Never go back to a lit firework either. Just leave it until tomorrow or the next day, so that you know it's not going to go off."
