People across South Yorkshire & the rest of the UK are being asked to take part in a two-minutes' silence at 11am today.

It's to mark Armistice Day, which is when an agreement was made back in 1918 to end the fighting in the first world war.

Nicola Cook represents the Royal British Legion across Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

She reckons plenty of people will be attending services locally, after many were cancelled because of the pandemic in 2020:

"Seeing someone with a tin and a poppy is just kind of part of who we are.

"I know it's so important to the population of South Yorkshire to see that, as it gives us a sense of reassurance that things are normal.

"Last year, I know South Yorkshire as a region was really affected by the fact that we didn't have volunteers out on the streets for the poppy appeal for the first time in our history.

"Not being able to mark Armistice day physically either was something else which hurt people in South Yorkshire.

"There's now such an overwhelming sense of joy that things are almost back to normal.

"It'd be great if people could just stop and think for two minutes at 11am about what our armed forces have done for our nation.

"Of course, the armed forces have done so much in conflict, but also more recently during the Covid-19 pandemic, as they helped out loads with the testing and vaccination clinics."
