Police have launched an investigation after a gun was fired at a home in Doncaster last night.

Officers were called at 12:24am this morning (July 18) after reports of gunshots and a red 4x4 speeding away from the scene on Petersgate in Scawthorpe.

A home had been hit twice - with bullets hitting a door and window. A woman and her child who were inside were unharmed.

A short time later the red 4x4 believed to be involved was found burned out on Green Lane.

Detective Inspector Claire Moss, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "A completely innocent mum and her child were in bed asleep at the time of this incident. This reckless behaviour could have had fatal consequences and this is something we will not tolerate.

"Our enquiries remain ongoing, but we strongly believe this was a targeted attack gone wrong.

"Our officers will be out today speaking to witnesses, conducting house to house enquiries and collecting CCTV footage.

"During investigations such as this, we rely on intelligence which you, our community, hold. If you have information that can assist with our investigation, it is vital you share it with us.

"Rest assured, we will find not stop until we find those responsible."
