Supertram summer improvement works begin across Sheffield
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority allocated £5 million to extend the route's lifespan
Improvement works are beginning this weekend on the South Yorkshire Supertram system, following a £5 million investment.
The public transport network which extends between Sheffield and Rotherham, came into public ownership in March for the first time since 1997.
Following this, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has heavily invested in the network, earmarking £5 million to future proof and extend the rail system's lifespan.
As a result, works to improve the network are taking place to ensure the system remains safe and long-lasting.
From Saturday (July 20th) until August 2nd, improvement works to the system will be carried out - resulting in some disruption to passengers.
The SYMCA has said that the improvement works are set to cause minimal disruption, only affecting small sections of the network's tracks at a time.
Whilst sections of the network will be affected, the majority of the tram system will be unaffected and will continue to operate as normal.
Speaking about the next phase of development, Melanie Corcoran - Executive Director of Transport at the SYMCA - said that the improvement works were vital to keep the future of the tram network alive.
"The latest phase of works planned to take place during the summer are part of SYMCA’s ongoing investment in Supertram. The rerailing works are critical to extend the lifespan of one the region’s best loved modes of transport," she said.
"By scheduling works over the school summer holidays, when we have smaller passenger numbers, we hope to minimise any passenger and traffic disruption and keep people moving while this work progresses.
"By investing in replacing the track we’re increasing the longevity of the region’s tram network and ensuring the safe operation of this popular service for generations to come."
Those who may be affected due to the ongoing works to the network are urged to make alternative travel arrangements, including using the South Yorkshire bus network.
