There's a call for parents across South Yorkshire & North Derbyshire to 'be wary' of how much salt their children are eating.

A new report has found over a third of restaurants are providing more than the daily recommended amount of salt for a child - in just one meal.

Nicola Newton works a nutritionist in Sheffield - She says it's something we need to keep an eye on:

"It's hidden in a lot of things, like sauces and pastas.

"When you go to restaurants, a lot of the focus is just on calories and not on salt.

"Children are adding table salt as well, which is another issue in itself.

"We do need some salt, but table salt in some cases has been chemically stripped and can really push up blood pressure.

"It's always best to stick to pink Himalayan salt if possible.

"A lot of people think sugar is one of the main causes of obesity, but salts can be just as harmful too."

Currently, one in five businesses are not disclosing the salt content of their meals online and just six businesses are fully compliant with the government’s voluntary salt target for children’s meals, set to be achieved by end of 2024.
