Sheffield MP criticises Home Office over police funding formula
Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough MP Harry Harpham has hit out at the Home Office.
Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough MP Harry Harpham has hit out at the Home Office after new figures show that, under the Government’s proposed new funding formula for police forces, South Yorkshire Police is set to receive £28.4m less than originally expected.
The government have since admitted the figures were wrong and would never have indicated the actual police budget. They've put the review on hold.
Mr Harpham said:
"PCCs up and down the land have described the review as fundamentally unfair, some are now threatening legal action against the Home Office, and all the while police forces have been making plans for the next financial year based on bogus figures.
“South Yorkshire has well and truly had the rug pulled from under its feet, with funding expected to be £28.4m less than originally expected. This is the biggest loss of any of the 43 forces in England and Wales.
“Whatever confidence anyone still had in this review has been shattered. More ‘pauses’ won’t help. The Government need to scrap it altogether and launch a fresh consultation”
The Minister for Policing has said he's determined to make sure there is a fair process going forward.
