Sheffield man jailed for 10 years after string of robberies

He carried out the offences last August, while armed with weapons

A Sheffield man has been jailed for 10 years after carrying out a string robberies where he threatened his victims with weapons.

Debesay Teklehaymanot, 19 , of Ellerton Road, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday after being found guilty of robbery, possession of an offensive weapon and assault.

He carried out the robberies last August - starting on the 21st, when he threatened a man with an axe on Egerton Street.

He forced his victim to his knees and stole his wallet. When the man revealed his card pin number Teklehaymanot withdrew £200.

The following morning at around 3am he approach a woman who was walking alone through Sheffield City Centre.

He threatened her with a weapon before stealing her bank card.

He then hit her twice over the head before escaping.

On the 23rd of August he threatened a third victim on Arundel Gate, stealing his car and house keys.

Teklehaymanot was arrested after attempting to follow a man home from the pub on the 1st of September.

Detective Constable Ryan Griffiths said: "We work hard to take those who cause fear and harm in our communities off the streets."

"Teklehaymanot carried out a series of terrifying robberies that left his victims highly distressed."

"This man showed no remorse for his actions throughout the investigation, replying ‘no comment’ in all his police interviews."

“He has now been given a significant sentence behind bars and will have to serve at least two thirds of his sentence before being considered for release."
