Rotherham man jailed after his DNA found on stolen car's number plate
45 year old Andrew Elliot used tape in an attempt to conceal the fact he was driving a stolen car
A man has been jailed after his DNA was found on tape on a stolen car's number plate in Rotherham.
45 year old Andrew Elliott, of Wingfield Road, was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison at Sheffield Magistrates Court after admitting to handling stolen goods.
The stolen vehicle was first spotted on July 18 in the Parkgate area by its owner - who had had his keys taken from his home the day before.
The victim and his partner ended up following the car to Dinnington, at which point roads policing officers took over.
The car failed to stop and was later abandoned, but Elliott was traced using DNA lifted from the vehicle.
Detective Sergeant Melissa Green, of South Yorkshire Police, said:
“These offences can have a lasting impact on victims. The feeling of someone taking your property can be very distressing so I hope the victim is reassured by this result.
“I hope this helps to show local communities our commitment to bringing criminals who believe they can evade responsibility for their actions to justice.”
