There's a call for people across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire to 'remember the fallen' this weekend.

It's ahead of armistice day on Sunday - which marks the anniversary of the agreement to end fighting in the First World War.

In Barnsley - a short remembrance service is set to take place this morning from 11am at the Town Hall.

The Mayor of Barnsley - Councillor James Michael Stowe - says it's a chance for young people in the town to learn about its history:

"It'll give the opportunity to nurseries, schools and colleges to come down and pay their respects.

"The young people will then get chance to lay wreaths of flowers and to remember the dedication that the people of Barnsley have given to our armed forces.

"It'll be part of a learning project for young people to understand the dedication that is needed to be in the armed forces.

"Potentially, it might encourage these young people to join the armed forces, as it may show them the career opportunities that they may get in the armed forces family.

"Barnsley is very proud of our links with our armed forces and our veterans.

"It's part of Barnsley's culture that young people understand what happened in the world wars.

"I think it's important that we respect the past, remember the fallen, but think to the future."
