People heading out in South Yorkshire today to follow the Queen's Baton Relay are being reminded to 'take precautions' due to the ongoing heatwave.

The event is passing through Sheffield this morning in the city centre & the English Institute of Sport ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this month.

Gary Clifton from Sheffield City Council admits the warm weather has its pros & cons:

"If I'm honest, I'd like it to be a bit cooler than it is right now.

"Dry weather is always fabulous on an event and the sun is always fabulous on an event. It makes everybody feel better and it makes everywhere look better.

"People feel more comfortable when they're carrying less equipment around with them, but they do need to be careful, stay hydrated and get their sunblock on.

"We've got about between 300-400 local school kids coming down for a bit of a sports festival in the EIS both during and after the Baton relay, so it promises to be a nice day for everyone.

"Sport is a part of Sheffield's DNA, so we're delighted to be a part of it."

The Games are set to begin on Thursday 28th July and are due to finish on Monday 8th August.
