Police called to Meadowhall after reports of stabbing

Two men are being questioned on suspicion of assault

An investigation is underway following reports of a stabbing at Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield.

Officers were called at around 6.23pm on the 2nd January to reports of an assault.

Two men were taken to hospital.

One shopper told us: "It was very scary to see this happening in a shopping centre, especially Meadowhall. I didn't expect this to happen.

"The staff, police and security guards were absolutely brilliant. They quickly responded to the incident and moved everyone to a safer place.

"Everyone was running and so scared, and to be fair, everything that happened was a blur.

"It was a horrible thing to see it."

In a statement South Yorkshire Police say: "At 6.23pm yesterday (2 January) we were called to Meadowhall Shopping Centre in Sheffield following reports of a stabbing.

"It is believed a group of men, who were known to each other, were involved in an altercation within the centre, in which two of the men were stabbed.

"The two men, both aged 19, were taken to hospital. One of the men received minor injuries and has since been discharged, and the second man received serious injuries. He remains in hospital at this time.

"Two men, aged 24 and 20, have been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and remain in custody at this time.

"There is no longer a police cordon inside the shopping centre, however, enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information which may assist officers is asked to report it via 101, quoting incident number 728 of 2 January."

A spokesperson for Meadowhall, said: “A section of Upper High Street was closed yesterday evening due to an isolated police incident.

"The safety of our visitors, colleagues and retail partners is our number one priority, the area has now fully reopened and the centre is operating as normal.

"We are working in full collaboration with the South Yorkshire Police to assist in their investigation.”
