Police are reassuring a community in Sheffield after reports of gunshots being fired outside a corner shop.

The incident - which officers believe was a targeted attack - happened on Nodder Road in Woodthorpe yesterday afternoon.

Police say two men got out of a white Ford Transit van outside the Premier convenience store at around 2.20pm.

A silver Toyota Corolla then pulled up behind the van and allegedly fired a gun as the two men went into the shop.

“We believe that this was a targeted attack upon specific individuals," says Detective Inspector Paul Wilson.

“I understand that this is a frightening incident and I want to reassure the local community that we are treating it as a priority.

"Additional, high visibility patrols have been deployed into the area and even though we are in the early stages of the investigation, a number of enquiries have already been conducted with further, potential leads to be followed.”

After the shot was fired, the two groups drove away from the scene towards Richmond Road, with the group in a short pursuit of each other before both vehicles left the area.

DI Wilson added: “We will not tolerate the use of firearms in South Yorkshire and those who believe they are above the law.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time, or believes they may have witnessed either vehicle, before or after the incident, to please come forward, as your information may be of extreme value to the investigation.”

The Toyota was recovered in the Poole Road area and members of the public may have seen the occupants getting out.
