Police patrols stepped up in Mexborough after second shooting
Police are appealing for information after a gun was reportedly fired through the window of a property in Doncaster.
At around 9pm yesterday officers were called to Victoria Road in the Mexborough area.
The people inside the property were not injured, and have been taken to a safe location where they are receiving specialist support.
One woman who works in the area but didn't want to be named said: "It's been going on for quite a while now, maybe a year or a year and a half.
"We have a big problem with Schofield Street and the gang culture that's arisen. People that we see come in and tell us about it and they're really distressed about it. It is definitely a big problem.
"We're not surprised at all when we hear it. It's just something you kind of get used to, which is really sad actually that you should have to get used to it. But we've heard so much of it.
"Thankfully no one was hurt, but it isn't a surprise anymore."
The incident comes just 24 hours after officers were called to reports of a gun being fired on Frederick Street.
Following the incident on Wednesday 20 January, three men were arrested on suspicion of firearm offences and have now been bailed pending further enquiries.
Detective Inspector Mark Monteiro from South Yorkshire Police said: “I understand that this will be extremely concerning for members of the Mexborough community as well as the wider general public.
“At this stage, we cannot say whether the two incidents are linked however it does appear that they were both targeted and that there is no wider threat to the community.
“Enquiries are ongoing and in the meantime, there will be a high number of uniformed officers in the area as well as increased patrols.
“Residents can be reassured that we have got a number of resources in place to bring those responsible to justice.
“I would appeal for anyone with information about either incident to contact 101.”
Anyone with information about the Victoria Street incident should contact 101 quoting incident 1063 of January 21 2016.
