Police officer seriously injured in Hexthorpe

A police officer’s in hospital with serious injuries after being attacked in Doncaster.

Police were called to Hexthorpe at 7.30 this morning to reports of a collision involving one vehicle on Cleveland Street.

Police say they received reports that a black Fiat Punto had hit a wall on Cleveland Street, and three people believed to have been travelling in the car fled from the scene and ran towards Cherry Tree Road.

Officers chased them on foot to a property near Cherry Tree Road, where an incident occurred in the garden.

A 45-year-old officer from Doncaster suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

His condition is now described as stable and the injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Three people, a woman and two men, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault offences. All three remain in police custody.

Doncaster Chief Superintendent Tim Innes said: “This was a shocking incident and highlights the dangers police officers face on a daily basis, not just in South Yorkshire but across the UK.
