A man's been arrested following a serious assault at a Rotherham petrol station.

The 23-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of racially-aggravated grievous bodily harm.

He's been released on bail pending further enquiries.

It's after a 31 year old Asian man was attacked by two men at the BP Garage in Herringthorpe just before 6am on Saturday 27 February.

It was reported that the victim had been dropped off by a taxi to use the cash machine at the garage when he was approached by two men.

The first man is reported to have punched the victim several times in the face before the second man used what has been described as a meat cleaver to injure his hand.

The two men then left the scene in a dark-coloured vehicle.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment, but has since been discharged.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to call them on 101, quoting incident 223 of 27 February 2016 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
