Police launch witness appeal after Hillsborough shooting

Police are urging anyone who knows anything to come forward.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses following yesterday's shooting in Hillsborough.

Officers were called to Penistone Road at about 2 o'clock after a gunshot was reported.

A 25-year-old man suffered leg injuries and is currently in hospital. His injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker said:

"We believe this incident to be a targeted attack on a particular individual, but we appreciate that incidents of this nature have a real impact on the local community.

"I would like to reassure residents that we believe there is not a wider danger to the public following this incident, and we will be providing an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance and support to residents.

"I would also ask that anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw anything suspicious at around 2pm to get in touch.

"Were you driving along Penistone Road at about 2pm? If you can help, please call police on 101 quoting incident number 479 of 20 January."

Police are currently dealing with reports that a man has been shot following an incident on Penistone Road in Sheffield.

Officers were called at 2pm today (20 January) following reports that a gunshot had been heard in the area. A man in his twenties was admitted to hospital a short time later with a gunshot wound to his leg, which is not considered to be life threatening.

An area of Penistone Road, close to the junction with Herries Road, remains closed while the investigation continues. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via: 101 and quoting incident number 479 of 20 January.
