Police investigating the murder of a woman in Sheffield have arrested a man.

A man's been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 22-year-old Sheffield woman.

The 37-year-old man, from the Colchester area, was arrested after a murder investigation was launched.

He has been taken into custody where he will be questioned by detectives.

At around 8.15am today police were called to Spotswood Close in Gleadless Valley to reports that a woman had been stabbed.

The 22-year-old was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

Police have launched a murder inquiry into the death of a 22-year-old woman from Sheffield.

At around 8.15am today (Tuesday 12 April), police were called to Spotswood Close in Gleadless Valley to reports that a woman had been stabbed.

The 22-year-old was taken to hospital but died a short time later. Her family has been informed.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Steve Ashmore said: “This is an extremely distressing incident and the victim’s family is currently being supported by specially trained officers.

“We are treating this as a targeted attack and I can reassure members of the public that we have a large number of resources at the scene and are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances.

“A murder investigation is underway and we urge anyone with information or anyone who saw or heard anything in the Spotswood Close area this morning to contact 101 quoting incident 161 of today.”

No arrests have been made at this stage.

A post-mortem is expected to take place later today
