Two friends who died in a taxi crash in Doncaster had been out with their partners at the races before the collision happened.

The women haven't been named yet but police have told us the two couples were on their way back to their hotel.

Two taxis were going in opposite directions along Great North Road when they hit each other near the Mount Pleasant hotel at around 12:25am on Sunday.

One, a Fiat Scudo, contained six passengers; three men and three women all aged in their twenties.

They were left with minor injuries.

In the second taxi, a LTI London taxi, the two women aged fifty nine and fifty two sustained fatal injuries while their partners were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Detectives want to hear from anyone who saw the vehicles before they crashed.

Sergeant Donna Roden's from the Serious Collisions Unit at South Yorkshire Police, she said:

"We want the help from the public. The circumstances are still under investigation and that's why we need witnesses to come forward to help us try and piece together what happened that night.

"It's really important people come forward because two ladies have lost their lives. We need to explain to their families how and why this has happened.

  • *

"It's happened in a rural area where there's only a hotel nearby. We need anyone who was travelling or walking in that area to come forward. It's crucial to explain and understand why this has happened. "

Police say they haven't had 'detailed accounts' from the drivers yet but will be speaking to them as part of their enquiries.

They were both taken to hospital.

Officers will also be speaking to the ten other people who were injured to get their accounts.

Sergeant Roden added:

"We're looking at everything really. We're appealing for witnesses who might have seen either of the vehicles around that time or the collision itself. We're looking at CCTV in the area and leading up to the area. We are keeping an open mind. It's very early in the investigation so we need to gather all the information before we can make any decisions on what's happened here."
