Police investigating alleged racist comment made towards Luton player during win at Sheffield United
Carlton Morris came off the bench to play a key role in the late victory for the opponents
South Yorkshire Police are investigating an alleged racist comment made towards a Luton player during their 3-2 win at Sheffield United on Boxing Day.
Carlton Morris complained about something being said in the home crowd late in the second half.
The striker came off the bench to create two own goals in four minutes for Luton as they beat the Blades in a crucial Premier League battle.
United had been on course for an important victory with goals from Oli McBurnie and Anel Ahmedhodzic.
Morris reported the issue to referee Sam Allison, who became the first black referee to officiate a Premier League match in 15 years.
The game was stopped while Allison spoke to both managers about the incident.
The Blades have issued a statement saying they have a "zero-tolerance approach" to racism:
"Sheffield United FC is disappointed to learn of an alleged racist incident, late in the game during the Premier League Boxing Day fixture against Luton Town.
"Once the club had been aware of the alleged incident, an investigation was instigated, and we are now in dialogue with South Yorkshire Police and Luton Town FC, and we thank both for their assistance.
"The club would like to again reiterate we take a zero-tolerance approach to racism and stands firmly against all forms of discrimination. There is no place for this behaviour in football, or society as a whole."
Luton Town have also issued a statement saying they will "offer Carlton and any other player suffering abuse our full support".
