Pets at Home says Swinton has some of the fattest dogs in the country with the average pet weighing 48% more than it ought to.

They've compiled the research by looking at vet records and are warning that feeding animals snacks like cheese and chocolate can damage bones and cause breathing problems.

Pets at Home said the average dog in Swinton weighs 48% more than it ought to.

Similar results are found in Edgware, Dundee and Beckton, where dogs are found to be 47% over their guideline weight.

Dogs in Bridport and Atherton are bucking the trend, being slightly underweight.

Closest to the ideal weight is County Durham's Consett, where dogs are just 0.99% overweight. The study by Pets at Home involved over half a million weigh-ins across the UK
