More people being killed on South Yorkshire's roads
New figures reveal the number of people losing their lives has almost doubled in the space of a year
The number of people being killed on South Yorkshire's roads has almost doubled in the space of a year.
Figures from South Yorkshire's Safer Roads Partnership show 49 people died in crashes last year, the highest figure since 2008.
Of those,19 were in Doncaster, 15 were in Sheffield, 12 were in Rotherham, and three were in Barnsley.
But the figures also show the total number of accidents has decreased, along with the number of casualties.
"We've spent a lot of time educating people so that we try and prevent the incidents," says Steve Help from the Safer Roads Partnership.
"And as these statistics indicate, we've seen an increase in fatalities over the last 12 months, but we have seen a decrease in actual road traffic collisions, so that's positive.
"What we're trying to get across is that it's vital that road users take responsibility for their actions whilst on the road.
"It's really important that you think of the conditions on the roads, and consider the way that you're driving and the impact that your actions can have on others."
The figures also show there were fewer casualties involving children and young drivers than ever before.
