South Yorkshire Police's latest canine recruit is celebrating detaining his first suspect, at the start of what officers hope is a long career in policing.

PD Maverick, a two-and-a-half-year-old Belgium Shepherd named after the Top Gun film, was on patrol last Thursday (November 6) in Sheffield.

He chased down the driver of a white Renault van which failed to stop, after the suspect dumped the vehicle on a dirt road.

The 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and dangerous driving.

He was also further arrested on suspicion of theft - after the vehicle was determined to be stolen.

PD Maverick's handlers say its a 'proud moment' in his career.
