More than 90 percent of over 50s in Sheffield have now had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

Over 260,000 people have had a jab in the city, with the top 9 priority groups covered before the national deadline of April 15th.

The UK hit its cutoff for vaccinating all priority groups three days early, with 32 million people given the first dose.

In line with national progress, Sheffield has given 90% of people aged over 50 their first dose of the vaccine and out of the 260,000 people vaccinated, 72,000 have now received a second dose.

Alun Windle, Chief Nurse and COVID Vaccination Lead at NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group, thanked everyone who had been vaccinated so far:

“It’s fantastic that the UK has reached this milestone and that our vaccination programme in Sheffield has been successful in offering vaccination to everyone in the top priority groups”.

Dr Terry Hudsen, GP and NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group Chair, urged those who are in a priority group who haven’t received a vaccine to take up the offer:

“I am so pleased that we are at a point of having offered the coronavirus vaccine to those who are most vulnerable to suffering serious effects from COVID”.
