More than 200 knives were recovered from South Yorkshire's streets last month.

It follows Operation Sceptre which is a national week of action to crackdown on knife crime.

In total, the force say 233 knives were recovered from targeted action by officers as well as from knife bins.

Operations included high-visibility and plain clothed patrols in identified hotspot areas, warrants and land sweeps in known areas where weapons are stashed.

Other weapons including 15 machetes, 26 axes and 18 swords were also found - bringing the total number of bladed items to 292.

Superintendent David Cowley, who is the force lead for knife crime at South Yorkshire Police said:

"Our officers continue to show our dedication in taking these out right appalling weapons off our streets.

"Unfortunately, we have seen some recent incidents where people have sadly died or were seriously injured as a result of knife crime. This is not acceptable. These incidents have left family's grieving and communities rightly shaken-up.

"If you see our officers around and have any concerns, please do stop and take to them. They are here to help."
