Find out which £1 coins are worth much more than their face value

We're nearing the end of the life of the current round £1 coin as they will be removed from circulation on the 15th October. Therefore, in the last month that we can spend the round pound, money website Change Checker has revealed which £1 coins we definitely shouldn't be cashing in.

According to the website there are five coins that we should be keeping an eye out for, as they are all worth more than their face value and some are actually quite common.

Starting with an Edinburgh City £1, this coin this was released in 2011 and less than a million were minted. This means it is the least common out of the five you should be looking for and you definitely shouldn't spend it as it's worth up to £16.

Next up is the Welsh equivalent of the Edinburgh City coin. The Cardiff City £1 coin was also released in 2011 and features the circular Coat of Arms of Cardiff as the principal focus to represent Wales. It is thought to be worth £11 - £15.

Third in the Change Checker's list is another in the capital city series, with London City. Compared to the Scottish and Welsh round pounds the English one is a lot more common with 2.6 million minted in 2010 when it was released. Because it is more common it is worth less than the previous two, however it is still worth more than £1, apparently selling for between £5 - £8.

The most recent coin to be listed in this top five is Scotland's Thistle and Bluebell. Even with a mintage of 5.1 million it is worth £3 - £5 to collectors, so worth keeping an eye out for.

Perhaps most surprisingly, the UK Crowned Shield £1 coin as pictured below, is worth more than its face value even though it is fairly common. It can currently fetch around £3 - £5.50. This old £1 coin was released nearly three decades ago in 1988, just five years are the £1 coin was introduced.

So as the old round pound is just a month away from being removed from circulation it's worth checking your change pots to make sure you don't have any old coins, or if you do they are the special ones listed above.

Now that the new £1 coins are in circulation there are some which which are also worth more than £1, here's how to spot those that could be worth up to £100.
