Non-league Barnsley footballer dies after collapsing on pitch

Daniel Wilkinson, 26, had been playing in a match against Brighouse Town when he suffered a suspected heart attack.

Non-league defender Daniel Wilkinson has died after collapsing on the field, his club Shaw Lane have announced.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the Northern Premier League Division One South side based in Barnlsey said the 26-year-old "passed away after collapsing on the pitch'' during a cup match against Brighouse Town last night.

The league's official website said the player "suffered a suspected heart attack'' and was treated by medics for over 30 minutes before being taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

Chairman Craig Wood added in the statement: "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time.

The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night. There are no more words at this time.''

Daniel started his career with Hull City before moving into the non-league set-up. He was signed from Rushall Olympic F.C. this summer and has also played for Scarborough Athletic.

In a statement, Barnsley F.C. paid tribute saying: "It is with great sadness that Barnsley Football Club has today learned about the passing of local footballer Daniel Wilkinson.

"Everyone at Barnsley Football Club sends their thoughts and condolences to Daniel's family and friends at this very difficult time."
