New schools in Sheffield to tackle places shortage
There are plans to build two new secondary schools in Sheffield to help deal with growing demand for places
Plans to tackle a lack of school places in Sheffield have been revealed.
They include building two new secondaries and expanding an existing infants school.
It comes after a public consultation with parents, carers and residents.
One of the new secondary schools, for pupils aged between 11 and 18, will be built on the car park of the Bannerdale site.
A 'through school' for children aged from two up to 18 years old will go on the former Pye Bank school site.
They'll be academies but aren't due to open until 2018.
There'll also be an expanded infant and junior school on the Ecclesall Infant School site.
More places will be created on a temporary basis at Silverdale Secondary as a short-term solution for meeting imminent demand before the new schools have been built.
Carterknowle Junior, Holt House and Clifford Primary schools will all be left as they are.
Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families said:
- *
"All comments and proposals have been reviewed thoroughly, we have listened to what poeple told us they wanted and I'm pleased to say our plans reflect what many told us.
- *
"We are expanding primary places where there is a crucial need for more places and leaving other school as they are after parents, carers, staff and governors told us this is what they wanted.
- *
"We are also building two new schools to address the need for secondary school places in both areas."
- *
An extra 2000 school places should be created.
The council will discuss the proposals next week when they're expected to be given the go ahead.
