New film festival for South Yorkshire to break down transgender stereotypes

It's claimed a new film festival in South Yorkshire championing the transgender community and giving them a voice could save lives.

The group behind (Trans)forming Cinema want to hold the festival in Sheffield to give people the chance to make their own films and tell their stories.

Nell Stockton's from the project: "If we can give hope and inspiration to people, that's really vital and it would be inspiring actually to think that we'd made a difference to people's lives.

"That acceptance is vital. People are often not accepted by their friends or family and they're actually rejected. We can serve as hope and inspiration for other people who are going through change.

"We often feel like we're talked about rather than having the voice ourselves. I think one of the things that we want to do is break down the stereotypes around trans people and make people see us as real people living ordinary lives."

The group are relying on winning a public vote to secure Big Lottery funding for the project.
